Chanca Piedra

Chanca piedra

Chanca piedra (Phyllanthus niruri, amarus) is a small annual herb typical of the Amazon forest and other tropical areas of the world, such as the Bahamas, South India and China.
It is no wonder that chanca piedra is used for many purposes in folk medicine: in clinical studies carried out over the years, the plant has shown protective activities of the liver, antilithic (expels the calculations), pain relievers, hypotensive, antispasmodic, antiviral, diuretic , antimutagen and hypoglycemic.

download (1) Chanca piedra has a long history of use in herbal medical systems in every tropical country where it grows. For the most part, it is used for very similar problems. However, there are some differences between the region and the region. There are many traditional uses. The main one is precisely for kidney stones and gallstones. The name of the plant derives from its actual use: in Spanish chanca piedra means “stone destroyer” or “stone crusher”. In addition to kidney stones, the natives of the Amazon use the chanca piedra for colic, diabetes, HIV, malaria, dysentery, fever, flu, tumors, jaundice, vaginitis, gonorrhea, syphilis, dyspepsia, to relieve pain, expel intestinal gas, stimulate and promote digestion, to expel worms and as a mild laxative. One of the last areas of research concerns the antiviral properties of this plant. Several studies have shown that chanca piedra could also protect the liver during hepatitis. Dr. Blumberg, winner of the Nobel Prize in 1963 for discovering the hepatitis B antigen, argued in 1988 that chanca piedra could be an adjunct in the treatment of hepatitis B. Several studies by Indian researchers and Chase Fox in collaboration with Blumberg, reported positive effects not only against hepatitis B, but also in the treatment of certain retroviruses such as HIV, sarcoma and leukemia.

In addition, an Indian and a British study have documented the efficacy of chanca piedra in the treatment of children with jaundice and hepatitis.
In 2000, one study demonstrated the adjuvant effect in decreasing the incidence of liver cancer. In fact, the proven ability of chanca piedra to stop cell mutation may play an important role in this anticancer action. Main actions: Antilitic (prevents and eliminates kidney stones), hepatoprotective (liver protector), diuretic, hepatotoxic ( detoxifies the liver), antiviral.
